About the ARA
In 2001, the State Government established the Armadale Redevelopment Authority (ARA) with the responsibility to plan, undertake, promote and coordinate the development and redevelopment of land in its redevelopment areas in accordance with the provisions of the Armadale Redevelopment Act 2001. The ARA is unique among Redevelopment Authorities in that its Act specifically requires it to undertake social as well as economic development.
Why an Audit?
The WA State Sustainability Strategy states,
'Sustainability is meeting the needs of current and future generations through an integration of environmental protection, social advancement and economic prosperity.'
The Western Australian government has demonstrated a strong commitment in promoting sustainability and ensuring government departments demonstrate leadership in the promotion of environmental, social and economic performance. The ARA wishes to demonstrate leadership within the Armadale region and raise the profile of sustainability in the area, promoting Armadale as a region that embraces change to create an environment that is both valued and rewarding for future generations.
Armadale's redevelopment will address not only the objectives of the WA State Sustainability Strategy (for urban renewal and revitalisation) but presents an opportunity to showcase many of the recommended Strategy actions to the rest of the State and nation. As part of this commitment, the ARA established an Implementation Strategy for Sustainability (August 2003). This document identified a number of key sustainability elements and essentially presents an action plan for the Authority to meet its sustainability objectives. One such objective is the implementation of a sustainability audit.
This audit will assess ALL developments located in the ARA Redevelopment Areas (only) against a set of sustainability indicators. To improve the sustainability of development, a range of minimum requirements have been established which all development must meet. These have been devised to minimise the information needed to complete an application for development whilst ensuring social, economic and environmental gains.
'The way we undertake development can make a world of difference'
